An Alphabet of Shapes is a modular visual language consisting of over 100 shapes, all derived from a single motif found in a traditional Indian block print. Echoing the structure of a jaali—the intricately carved stone screens of Indian architecture—this element evolved into a visual system that is part script, part ornament, part creature.
The 100+ shapes were first developed through pencil drawings on rice paper, then further explored through collage, resulting in block-printed textiles of Other Characters
Eline Groeneweg-Bhatt is a Dutch textile designer based in India, focusing on handmade, limited-edition textiles for interior spaces. Her studio brings together Indian textile traditions with her Dutch design background, integrating distinct approaches and visual languages to create a dialogue between cultures.
